Indoor Camogie: TYRONE FINAL 2020
The Station Centre in Omagh was the scene of this year’s annual Indoor Camogie Final. As in previous years, the standard was quite simply brilliant.
Holy Trinity P.S. Cookstown, Primate Dixon P.S. Coalisland, Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh Srath Bán, and Derrylatinee St. Francis’ P.S. all played marvellous camogie only to fall just short of making further progress towards the semi-final stage.
St. Colmcille’s P.S. Carrickmore topped Section ‘A’ with 3 wins from 3 and they were followed in second place by St. Ronan’s P.S. Recarson. Both schools had guaranteed themselves a semi-final slot. Meanwhile, Section ‘B’ was headed by Roan P.S. (our back-to-back champions from 2018 & 2019) who also had a perfect win record. Closely behind them came the Greencastle girls from Our Lady of Lourdes P.S. Both schools made it to the semi-finals.
As things transpired, the Section winners (Carrickmore and Roan) both found themselves in titanic tussles where a single goal was enough to see their downfall. This resulted in both Section Runners-Up, Recarson and Greencastle, making their respective way to the Co. Final. It would be remiss not to mention Roan P.S. who carried the mantle of back-to-back champions with such grace. No doubt these fine ambassadors will be back next year.
Everything was now set for the Final. St. Ronan’s P.S. Recarson got off to a blistering start taking a 3-0 lead. However, to their great credit, the Greencastle girls fought back to cut the gap to the bare minimum at 3-2. Time, however, was against them and the ref sounded the final whistle to signify the end of an extraordinary Final. Mr McCloy can be very proud of his Greencastle girls – they gave it their all.
Meanwhile, this victory tasted extra special for Mrs. Meenagh’s girls as they emulated yesterday’s success of the boys who captured the County Hurling title. This much cherished Co. Camogie crown is thoroughly deserved. It was some 24 hours for Recarson – a day for the history books. Double champions!
A special word of thanks goes to all accompanying teachers and team mentors. Our appreciation also goes to our county coach referees Ethan McNally and Damhlaic Rush for their expert officiating, and to Brian Laverty (Tyrone GDM) for his invaluable assistance throughout our series of heats. To our Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Ulster and Tír Eoghain officer Pat McGivern a word of thanks for coordinating this successful event.
St. Ronan’s P.S. Recarson: Comhghairdeas! They now have the honour of representing Tyrone twice in the Ulster Finals to be held in Magherafelt.
Ádh mór!
A truly memorable day for all involved. Maith sibh!
