St. Mary's Ballygawley Clinches Victory

Dungannon, March 5, 2025 – The Loughview Centre in Dungannon was alive with excitement today as it hosted the fifth heat of the annual Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Tyrone 5-a-side Girls’ Indoor Gaelic Football tournament for primary schools. The event featured six enthusiastic teams, each eager to showcase their talent and sportsmanship in a series of thrilling matches.

The teams competing were:

  1. St. Mary’s Ballygawley
  2. St. Patrick’s Aughadarragh
  3. Gaelscoil Aodha Rua
  4. St. Malachy’s Glencull
  5. St. Brigid’s Altamuskin
  6. St. Mary’s Cabragh

From the first whistle, the competition was fierce, with each team demonstrating remarkable skill and determination. The young athletes, cheered on by their teachers, played with passion and energy, making for an unforgettable day of indoor Gaelic football.

St. Mary’s Ballygawley, led by their dedicated teacher Mrs. Phair emerged as the standout team of the day. Their exceptional teamwork and skill throughout the tournament secured their place in the final against St. Malachy’s Glencull, guided by Mr. Canavan.

The final match was a thrilling encounter, with both teams giving their all in a bid to claim victory. The players from St. Malachy’s Glencull put up a valiant fight, showcasing their impressive defensive strategies and quick counter-attacks. However, it was St. Mary’s Ballygawley who emerged victorious, thanks to their relentless offensive play and solid teamwork.

Mrs. Phair, the proud teacher of the winning team, praised his players for their hard work and dedication. “I’m incredibly proud of the girls. They’ve trained hard and shown great commitment to the sport. Today’s victory is a testament to their effort and teamwork,” she said.

Mr. Canavan, the teacher of the runner-up team, also commended his players for their outstanding performance. “Our girls played with heart and determination. They gave it their all, and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts,” he remarked.

The success of the event was a testament to the efforts of the organisers, teachers, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly, special mention to Mr Canavan from St Malachy's who organised today's event. Their commitment to promoting Gaelic football and providing young athletes with opportunities to showcase their talents is truly commendable.

With the fifth heat now complete, the focus shifts to the upcoming stages of the tournament, indoor finals day in MUSA on 11th March, where the remaining teams will continue to battle it out for the coveted title.
